Are You Prepared for a Quake?

The Great Shake Out happens today at 10:20 a.m.

Earthquake preparedness is part of life in California, especially in Silicon Valley.

There are various active faultlines that run through the area, and Gilroy is no exception.

The Great California Shake Out takes place today, Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m. The idea behind this is for everyone to drop, cover and hold for at least 60 seconds at that time, no matter where they are to bring awareness to earthquake preparedness.

Earlier this week, the anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was remembered, and the damage it left in its wake.

As part of the ShakeOut, there are 127 individuals or families registered in Santa Clara County for the 2011 Great California ShakeOut, with a total of 373 participants.

Over 8.5 million people are currently registered throughout the state, with a total of 257,411 from Santa Clara County.

There are 70 schools or school districts that are also registered within the county.

In Santa Clara County, there is the Alert SCC which is a system that keeps registered residents in the loop during a natural disaster such as an earthquake.

Within Gilroy, the is not only a local way to keep in contact during these types of natural disasters, but it's also a way to help agencies identify how to prevent safety hazards before and after major disasters.
