Fireworks Go On Sale in Gilroy July 1

The Garlic City is the only Santa Clara County municipality where "safe and sane" fireworks can be bought—and shot—from July 1 through 4.

For four days beginning July 1 and ending midnight Independence Day, Gilroy residents can purchase and light up "safe and sane" fireworks within the city limits, making the Garlic City the only Santa Clara County municipality to allow such explosive activity.

Sixteen sale booths, located throughout the city, have permits to sell the sparklers. Each is a non-profit and part of the proceeds from what they are able to sell go towards the organizations.

According to the city of Gilroy's website, some of these booths may be open as early as 9 a.m. and close as late as 10 p.m. Fireworks can only be sold to Gilroy residents and proof of residence may be required at the time of purchase.

Safe and sane fire works come with a state fire marshal approval stamp. They do not leave the ground or explode, the city's restrictions state. Persons caught with any other fireworks will be issued a misdemeanor with a either a $1,000 penalty or an administrative citation of $250, depending on the circumstances of the situation.
