GHS Zumba Fundraiser Set for Saturday

Gilroy High School students are having a Zumba party on Saturday to try and replenish their freshman fund.

We’ve all heard that working out can be fun, but on Saturday it can be fun and benefit a local school.

The freshman class of is hosting a Zumba fundraiser on Saturday to help recover costs incurred during the construction of their homecoming float, according to Juan Davalos, Gilroy High School freshman vice president.

Their float, constructed in October, may have won second place, but now the teens are more than $3,000 in the whole, Davalos said. He added that the class is also looking to give their fund a boost so students can do “fun things,” too.

The freshman class uses their fund throughout the year for smaller activities, as well as larger ones like homecoming. Davalos hopes the Zumba event will contribute upward of $500 to their depleted fund.

"When we have money in our fund, we can, say, have pizza at lunch or activities with just the freshmen," Davalos said.

Davalos has been doing Zumba for the past two years, and said it was his idea to use Zumba and as the theme for the freshman fundraiser.

The Zumba event is being referred to as a “party” instead of just a workout or fundraiser, and is attracting participants from as far away as San Jose and Santa Cruz.

“Zumba is a big thing,” laughed Davalos. “I think this is the biggest [fundraiser] the high school has had because nobody throws parties.”

Davalos said he refers to Zumba—a Latin-inspired dance workout with international music—as a party because of its high-energy and the associated fun.

Even though the fundraiser will take place at the high school’s cafeteria, Ondy Gamble, Gilroy High School activities director, said the community outside of the school is welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be waivers for both minors and adults available at the door, she added.

Tickets can be purchased at the high school or at Gilroy Health and Fitness. As of Tuesday, Gamble said only six tickets have been sold at the school, while Davalos said five have been sold at the health club.

“People have been talking about this a lot, so we’re guessing a lot of tickets will be sold at the door,” Gamble said.

Davalos said that in his past Zumba parties it’s been common for tickets to be bought last minute or even at the door.

Zumba parties are often done for charities, according to Davalos, who added that Gilroy Health and Fitness instructors are also throwing a Zumba party on Dec. 15 for their Toys for Tots fundraiser.

Gilroy Health and Fitness instructors are volunteering to help out with Saturday’s fundraiser, along with a DJ. Davalos also said that the local Safeway has donated water for the event.
