UPDATE: Morgan Hill Day Care Evacuated After Report of Gas Leak

A third-party contractor working the area of West Main and Del Monte avenues reportedly ruptured a roughly 1-inch gas line this morning. A nearby day care center has been evacuated as crews work to stop the flow of gas.

A Morgan Hill day care center was evacuated shortly after 9 a.m. this morning after a gas leak was reported in the area of West Main and Del Monte avenues, according to City of Morgan Hill spokeswoman Maureen Drewniany.

Children and staff have not been allowed to return to Learn In Play, located at 174 West Main Avenue, since this morning, Drewniany said. She did not know how many people were inside the building at the time of the evacuation.

While no immediate danger exists, several residences near the leak have also been evacuated as a precaution, Drewniany said. A 1-block radius has been set up where people have been given the option to either leave or "shelter in place," meaning they need to turn their gas off.

Morgan Hill police and fire crews were on scene to make sure repairs to the line ran smoothly, Drewniany said. They have since left the scene, though PG&E crews remain to finish patching up the leak.

"PG&E has been able to pinch the line and are working to return everything back to normal," she said.

A third-party contractor doing routine construction work on Main Avenue is reportedly the cause of the leak, Drewniany said.

The road has been shut down on Main Avenue between Hill Road and Del Monte Avenue, Drewniany said. She expects the work will take several more hours to complete. The road will remain closed until that time.
