Jamie Kightley lived with his parents at London Road, Northampton

A father, accused with his partner of killing their baby, has told a court the pair were drinking and smoking drugs the night before the boy died.

Seven-week-old Jamie Kightley suffered more than 40 rib and leg fractures and died in hospital on 17 March last year.

Adam Kightley, 24, told Nottingham Crown Court he and Jacqueline Parker, 21, had both drunk two cans of lager and smoked cannabis on the night.

The pair, of London Road, Northampton, have denied murder.

Mr Kightley told the jury the pair went to bed after drinking and smoking.

He said that when he woke at around 06:00 GMT, the baby was not breathing.

Earlier, the court was told Jamie had been assaulted about two weeks before his death, and within hours of his death.

He had extensive bruising all over his body, had no pulse and was not breathing when he arrived at Northampton General Hospital by ambulance at about 06:30 GMT.

The prosecution claim one or both parents assaulted Jamie, causing his death.

Mr Kightley and Ms Parker have also denied causing or allowing Jamie's death.

The trial continues.
