Length of Internship:                                 November 2013-March 2014 

Position:                                                        Muralist Assistant Internship ($500.00 Stipend)

 

Focus Area:  San Ysidro Park Mural Restoration Project         

 

Project Mission: To restore murals painted at San Ysidro Park of Mayan Ball Players painted by the Tecolote Club in 1978.  

 

Summary and Position Responsibilities:

 

The Muralist Assistant Intern will be responsible for the following: assisting the Muralist or CARAS staff to purchase all supplies and materials, set up and clean-up of the site, painting the mural, pressure washing, pre painting prep work, filling and patching cracks, and construction of any necessary scaffolding etc.

 

The Muralist Assistant Intern will also assist the Muralist and C.A.R.A.S staff in any outreach activities related to the completion of the mural project including canvasing the nearby neighborhood and attending the Mural Kick-off and Mural Dedication events.

 

The Muralist Assistant Intern will also be required to work on the Mural Restoration Project on Fridays, Saturdays and one other weekday to be determined by the Muralist at a later date.

 

Position Objectives:

Objective #1:  Learning Muralist Painting Skills:

a.    The Intern will learn to prepare and implement mural painting projects.

b.    The Intern will learn to build a grid and use scaffolding to complete a large public mural.

 

Objective #2:  Learning Community Project Organizing Skills:

a.      The Intern will learn to outreach to the community and inform them of the project and its goals.

b.      The Intern will learn to coordinate and recruit volunteers from the community to help with the completion of the Mural Restoration Project.

 

Outcomes:

The Interns will complete the restoration of the San Ysidro Park Mural project. The Interns will be prepared to seek out other historical and cultural murals in need of restoration and coordinate future projects in the community.
