Santa Clara County was aflutter with seismic activity this past week as 13 earthquakes rumbled close to seven area cities.
Six quakes hit South County alone, including two that registered a 3.0 or above on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s website.
The first of two quakes to strike near Gilroy punched in at a 1.2, hitting at 12:11 a.m. Friday three miles south of the Garlic City.
The next night, a heavy 3.0 shaker jolted an area five miles southeast of the city at 8:12 p.m.
Morgan Hill saw its fair share of tremblers, including a 3.3 quake that rocked an area nine miles north of the city. This one hit at 1:13 a.m. Monday. A 1.5 aftershock clocked in over an hour later at 2:43 a.m., emanating from the same location.
Another 1.5 quake had hit close to Morgan Hill two days earlier, striking at 3:52 p.m. eight miles to the north.
Not to be left out, San Martin saw a 1.0 rumble strike five miles northeast of the city at 7:03 p.m. Tuesday.
Cupertino had four quakes, three of which occurred on the same day. The first struck Tuesday at 12:14 a.m. Registering a 2.7, this trembler’s epicenter was four miles southwest of the city.
Three minutes later, a 1.2 quake struck from the same direction but three miles out from city limits. Later that same day, a 1.1 rumble hit three miles west at 1:57 p.m. Another 1.1 struck at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, three miles out west as well.
Campbell was startled by a tiny tremble at 5:36 p.m. Friday. Registering a 1.0, the quake hit just one mile southwest of the Orchard City.
Earlier in the day, a 1.1 quake quivered four miles northeast of Milpitas. Striking at 4:18 a.m., the quake’s epicenter was measured at a depth of 0.0 kilometers, indicating it may have been a quarry blast picked up by the USGS's equipment.
Los Altos completed the county’s baker's dozen with a 1.5 rumble of its own, which struck at 12:43 a.m. Thursday three miles south of the city.
