Farmers Market will Honor Vets, 9/11 Victims this Sunday

Gilroy's weekly farmers market will hold a barbeque on the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy.

In addition to the usual variety of local food and crafts, the Gilroy Farmers Market will be honoring veterans and 9/11 victims on Sunday with a volunteer barbeque and flag ceremony, said Catalina Ventura, market coordinator.

The 10 a.m. ceremony will kick off a day offering some of the last berries of the season, and some new goodies that have started to trickle in.

  • Smokey the Bear: The well-known fire safety icon will be at the farmers market entertaining and informing kids from 10:30 to 1 p.m., along with a fire safety group.
  • Last-chance berries: Vasquez Farms will be out with the last of their popular harvest of strawberries, blackberries, red raspberries and golden raspberries.
  • In come the apples: Silva Apple Orchard will be offering a delicious assortment of apples and ciders pressed in nearby Watsonville.

“September being one of the most delicious if not productive months for harvest in  California you do not want to miss the peppers, watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, plums, peaches, pears, apples, squash, greens....the list goes on and on!,” said the market coordinator.

One a few weeks remain to sign up for the first-annual Harvest Festival, Ventura said. The festival, held on Sept. 25, will feature over 50 vendors, live music from Michael Annotti, demonstrations and activities for the kids.
