Mom's Talk Q&A: Mom's Groups

Dear Mom's Talk: I'm new to the area and have a few children, and I am looking for groups to get involved with, like a Mom's group where I can bring the kids. Are there any around here?

I myself do not have any groups that I participate in.  However, I have a baby due soon and would love to join some as well. 

Meetup.com is a great source for groups of all kinds.  You can look up groups by ZIP code or by category. It's free to join, and there are hundreds of groups in the area. There are groups for specific ages of children and groups for going out with other moms.

I suggest that you go to the site and do a search for a group that you would like to join. You can also form your own group, but this does cost money through the site. You would pay a small monthly fee, and members can search for your group and sign up.

What I like about this site is the fact that if you don’t see a group that you like, you can design and post your own. Consider what you like to do with your kids, like walk in the park. Then, set up a walking group and meet at Mount Madonna or Christmas Hill Park.

There is also a group called "Moms of Gilroy and Morgan Hill," which is a play group/mom group. It has events for kids and for just moms. 

Those are a few suggestions for you. Try asking at your doctor’s office for some possibilities. Another thing you can do is to call your health insurance provider. Sometimes those will offer classes for parenting and so forth.
