POLL: Should Wastewater Rates be Increased?

The city council voted to raise wastewater rates during Monday's meeting.

Beginning March 1 of this year Gilroy residents will see an increase in their wastewater rates. The city council voted to raise wastewater rates by five percent and to raise rates by 40 percent over the next five years.

This vote was made in an attempt to maintain the city's wastewater utility services, after they received notice of needed part replacements.

The South County Regional Wastewater Authority (SCRWA) said the replacement of minor equipment could cost upward of $4 million, while the cost of replacing major-equipment could be as high as $25 million.

, several residents protested the rate increases, arguing that it will be too costly and that there isn't enough information about what the money will specifically go toward.

One Gilroy resident said, “There isn’t a specific project listed as the reason for bringing the increases. This gives me the impression that we’re supposed to write a blank check. Is this money going toward infrastructure, or toward more of the irresponsible and reckless spending of the Santa Clara Water District’s six-figure salaries and perks?”
