Report: Gilroy Earns 'F' for Tobacco Control Policies

Lung Association Report Grades All California Cities and Counties On Key Tobacco Control Policies

Gilroy has earned an "F" grade for its tobacco control efforts, according to the latest report card issued by the American Lung Association. 

The letter grades were given based on how many "points" cities were awarded for certain tobacco-free initiatives and policies.  Gilroy received a total of 1 out of 12 possible points when it came to deciding the "overall tobacco control grade."

The breakdown of points in other sub-categories for Gilroy was as follows:

  • Recreation Areas-- 2 out of 4

  • Worksites-- 0 out of 1
    Smokefree Housing--  Letter grade of F given
    • Nonsmoking Units-- 0 out of 4
    • Nonsmoking Common Areas-- 0 out of 4
    • Disclosure-- 0 out of 4
    • Nuisance-- 0 out of 1
    • Housing Authority Units-- 0 out of 1
      Reducing Sales of Tobacco Products-- Letter grade of F given
      • Tobacco Retailer Licensing-- 0 out of 4
      • Sales near Schools and Parks-- 0 out of 1
      • Sales in Pharmacies-- 0 out of 1
      • Sampling of Tobacco Products-- 0 out of 1
