Well-Dressed Vegan Makes Exception for Fur Fashion

Give Adrian Avina a plastic shopping bag, and he will make it into the hottest new trend. He sees the possibilities for fun with fashion in lace, plastic and even skinned fox.

Adrian Avina, has a closet that would make Lady Gaga weep. Plastic jackets, skinned foxes? You name it, Avina has it.

Gilroy Patch caught up with him and asked a few fashion questions.

Gilroy Patch: Can you describe what you’re wearing and where you got everything?

Adrian Avina: Well, currently I am in head-to-toe American Apparel, and these shoes I got for $5 at Salvation Army. They were brand-new when I got them, but now they are a little scuffed up. They are party girl shoes.

Avina: Where do you like to shop?

Patch: I do a lot of shopping at Salvation Army, Savers, Goodwill and yard sales. I stop at every yard sale I can find. One of my neighbors has a yard sale every weekend!

Patch: How does your family feel about your style?

Avina: I live with my brother and grandpa. I show my brother my clothes all the time. He is always like, “Why are you do excited about your shoes?,” and I’m like, “They are $5!”

Patch: Is your hair a part of your fashion statement?

Avina: I’m just trying to look like Diana Ross.

Patch: Do you have any style icons?

Avina: No, not really. I kind of just see individual pieces and work them into my wardrobe. I bought this huge pink plastic jacket with a yellow zipper and turquoise triangles and I just had to have it. I don’t know when I’ll wear it, but the day will come where I will be strutting around in the grocery store wearing this big plastic jacket.

Patch: Can you tell me about your closet?

Avina: I have a double rolling rack in my room. My closet is exploding. I have these black boxes that hold all of my shorts and pants. I have jackets hanging off the walls and hanging on my desk. There are just clothes everywhere. I buy a lot of stuff to sell. Sometimes I’ll try to gift it to someone or sell it to Crossroads or Black and Brown.

Patch: How often do you just gift clothes?

Avina: I love gifting clothes. I’m just like, here, give this a life and have fun with it. I’ll buy girl clothes and give them to my girl friends. I always tell people as long as you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, nobody will care.

Patch: Do you have any shopping weaknesses?

Avina: Clothes are my weakness! Jackets are my weakness. I have like three bags full still of jackets from the Salvation Army during a half-off sale. I seriously bought seven trench coats.

Patch: What is the most expensive thing you have in your closet?

Avina: I love fur right now, real and fake. I actually just got a skinned fox. It has, like, the feet and head on it still. It’s just literally a skinned fox to wear as a scarf. I usually don’t eat a lot of meat; I thought it would be funny to go out to get vegan food, and say, hey, girl pass me that tofu, even though I’m wearing this fox!

Patch: What is the most daring thing you have in your closet?

Avina: I feel like everything is daring. I like see-through stuff. I love lace right now.

I kind of just go through every decade. I definitely want to be like more ‘80s, more plastic clothes. I’m not really a T-shirt kind of guy. My favorite T-shirt right now is a Manson T-shirt. I cut it into a crop top, and I love it now!
