Face Behind the Garlic Symbol
JoAnne Robinson, winner of the 2011 Gilroy Garlic Festival poster contest, sheds insight on her life and work
You may already recognize this symbol: a scrumptious piece of garlic laden with orange text proclaiming Gilroy's biggest summer attraction. The woman behind the logo is JoAnne Perez Robinson, this year's winner of the Gilroy Garlic Festival poster contest.
"I love Gilroy, so that was pretty cool for me," said Robinson, who also nabbed first place in 2006, and second in 2008 and 2010.
Born in San Carlos in 1958, Robinson moved to Gilroy in 1979. From an early age, she knew that she wanted to be an artist.

"For me, being an artist is what I am. I can't imagine not drawing or painting," said Robinson. "I am very passionate about it and thankful that I can do what I love."
She started selling her art in local galleries in 1994, and at art fairs in 2008.

"Art fairs are great for me, as I am in my studio a lot of the time, and it's wonderful to be out in the public and hear people comment on my work," said Robinson. "They help me realize I'm on the right path."
Robinson draws her inspiration from her surroundings. "I love the beauty I see in simple, everyday things that are often passed by, " she said.
Robinson paints in watercolors and acrylics, on canvas and panels. Her subject matter ranges from the sprawling lawn in front of the Eiffel Tower, to vivid, pastoral landscapes. She does pieces of all sizes.
"I think going back and forth between mediums and painting small, medium and large pieces makes me a better artist," said Robinson. "It's also really fun!"
