A grass and brush fire that burned about 50 acres in far southeastern San Jose west of Morgan Hill today is about 70 percent contained, a Cal Fire spokesman said.
As of about 6 p.m., firefighters were still putting out smoldering vegetation near Casa Loma and Uvas road about six miles west of U.S. Highway 101, Cal Fire spokesman Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke said.
"It's no longer spreading but they're still working on hot spots," Leitzke said.
The extent of the damage remained at 50 acres with no structure fires or injuries reported, Leitzke said.
Cal Fire personnel joined the San Jose Fire Department, Morgan Hill Fire Department and firefighters from the South Santa Clara County Fire District to battle the blaze, Leitzke said.
The firefighters plan to remain at the scene as long as it takes to douse all of the smoldering grass and brush, he said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Leitzke said.
Cal Fire received a call about a grass fire in the area at about 1:05 p.m., Cal Fire spokesman John Whiteside said.
The agency flew four aircraft over the fire area and dropped fire retardant to halt its spread along a ridge area, Whiteside said.
