As Halloween approaches, it’s important to make sure our pets stay safe during the festivities. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has some tips on how to make the holiday as safe as possible.
Watch the Candy
Keep the candy bowl for trick-or-treaters away from Fido and Fluffy. The chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats, and candies containing the artificial sweetener xylitol can cause stomach upset.

Keep an Eye on the Jack O’Lantern
Make sure your carved pumpkins are out of range from your pets as they could easily knock over a lit pumpkin or get burned by the flame. Pumpkins are not toxic, but could cause an upset stomach if eaten.

Hold the Door
When the trick-or-treaters start ringing the doorbell, it’s a good idea to keep your pets in a separate room during those hours. Too many strangers at the door can be stressful for pets, and you run the risk of your cat or dog darting out the door.
Be Careful with the Costume
Not all dogs or cats enjoy dressing up for Halloween. If it’s not working, don’t force it. Instead, try a festive collar or bandana. If your pet doesn’t mind wearing a costume, make sure there isn’t anything that he or she could eat and that the outfit allows full range of movement.

This week’s pet is Dexter, a two-year-old pit bull terrier mix. He’s full of spunk and personality and would thrive in a home where he could have some training and attention. And just look at those soulful eyes!
