Over 700 Gilroy Students Need to Receive a Whooping Cough Vaccination To Attend Class

Vaccination is now required by state law of all seventh through twelfth graders.

Many middle and high school students in Gilroy are racing the clock.

According to a KTVU news video, new students have nine days to prove they have received a whooping cough vaccination ("Tdap booster"), or they will be barred from attending class.

As of Wednesday, more than 700 students out of the 4,800 hundred students in the Gilroy Unified School District have not turned in their proof of vaccination, according to the news report.

Why should the students get vaccinated? Not just for their health, said South Valley Middle School principal Anisha Munshi in the video, but because, “we don’t want our students to be missing any amount of school.”

Assembly Bill 354, effective July 1, requires seventh through twelfth graders to receive the shot.

In Gilroy, the main four locations students can receive a whooping cough vaccination are the Gardner South County Health Center, School Health Clinics of Santa Clara County, , and .
