Phone Issues Continue after AT&T Fixes Cable

The repair was reportedly done at 3:30 a.m., but some customers are still experiencing phone and Internet connection problems in Santa Cruz County and Gilroy.

A slashed fiber optic cable that cut phone and Internet service to a massive amount of people in South Santa Clara County and much of Santa Cruz County on Tuesday was fixed early Wednesday. 

At 4:30 a.m, AT&T sent out the following update: "As of 3:30am AT&T has completed the splicing work, all affected services should be restored. If you continue to experience problems please contact customer service."

Over on our Patch Facebook pages, some locals are still reporting connection issues, despite the cable having been repaired.

On the Gilroy page, most people said everything is back to normal. But user Tony said the Bank of America ATMs were still down this morning, while two others said the Internet on their phones is still not working.  

Santa Cruz Patch Facebook user Elizabeth said her service remains spotty, but Watsonville and Capitola residents said everything is back to normal.

During the evening on Tuesday, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office called the vandalism an act of sabotage. By the end of the night, for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for cutting the cable.
