Police Close Part of Monterey Road After Four-Car Injury Accident

A woman was driving against traffic near Monterey and Luchessa.

Gilroy police closed part of Monterey Road Thursday night after a woman, driving against traffic, caused a four-car collision near Luchessa Avenue, police said. Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The collisions occurred around 7:30 p.m. said Gilroy police Sgt. Greg Flippo.

The woman, who may have been suffering from a diabetes-related health issue, crashed her SUV into another car, crashing into a third car as she spun out of control, Flippo said.

Gilroy resident Raul Canales said he heard the noise and went outside to discover his parked car, the forth in the incident, had been hit.

“I heard the bang and came outside,” Canales said. The rear of his van smashed, “But it could have been a lot worse," he said.

All three drivers were able to walk after the accident, but the woman and the third driver were hospitalized.

“If it weren’t for airbags, this would have ended very differently,” Flippo said.
