Staying Dry with Your Pet

A collection of indoor pet-related activities.

As we enter the rainy season, you may be looking for indoor activities to do with your pet. Here are several options.

This weekend, Jan. 28 and 29 the Golden Gate Kennel Club holds its annual dog show at the Cow Palace in Daly City. With more than 140 breeds represented, it’s the ideal venue to learn more about a breed or mix you might be considering to adopt. The show also features agility demonstration and seminars. For more information, visit the Golden Gate Kennel Club website.

Who couldn’t use a post-holiday season massage? Well, don’t forget your best friend! K9 Therapeutics offers dog massage services on the first and third Saturdays from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Pet Food Express at 1152 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose. Massage enhances a dog’s immune system, reduces stiffness and helps heal emotional trauma. Good candidates for massage are senior dogs, dogs suffering from cancer, large-breed dogs and shelter dogs or those that have been neglected or abused. However, every dog can benefit from some rubbing and kneading. Appointments are required. For more information, visit the K9 Therapeutics website.

Want to learn more about how to interact with your dog? The Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) holds a monthly dog book club and this month’s selection is, “On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals,” by Turid Rugaas. Join in on the discussion next Sunday, Jan. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. The meetings are facilitated by Elizabeth Laverty, who’s been a dog socializer volunteer at the HSSV for nine years. For more details, visit the HSSV website.

If you adopted a puppy over the holidays, here’s an opportunity to get out and about with your new bundle of fur. Happy Tails to You dog training offers puppy socials from 1 to 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month at 2045 Woodard Road in San Jose. Puppies must be younger than six months and be current with their vaccinations. Puppy socials are a good opportunity to socialize your pup with other dogs and humans and help develop their play and social skills. For more information, visit the Happy Tails to You website.
