Garlic Town Review 8

Garlic Town Review 8

Wow, Elysium is a mind blower of a film. Regarding  my  tolerance of violence in movies, I turn off Heidi when she gets kidnapped,  but the redeeming factor of this flick is Matt Damon’s acting. The premise is that earth is a disease ridden, overcrowded place. Elysium depicts Los Angeles as the place where all things bad have happened in the new age, around 2052. Too many illegal immigrants live here and are not entitled to the wondrous healthcare provided by magical boxes that cure diseases in seconds.

The wealthy have moved to a space station, Elysium, where the President and the wealthy live surrounded by an environment reminiscent of the 1950’s:  pool parties, clean skies and white people.  Actress Jody Foster is cold as the government protector against those who would invade the elite space on Elysium.

An orphan named Max promises his fellow orphan friend, Frey, that he will one day take her to Elysium.   A nun, his confidante, gives Max a pocket depiction of Earth as a wondrous place.  Max becomes a child crook stealing things trying to get the money to get to Elysium.  He turns the corner as an adult and is working hard and honestly in a factory that makes robots to serve and protect humans. He still has acquaintances such as Stinger who could get him to Elysium.  When a work accident caused by his boss radiates Max, giving him only 5 days to live, Max is bound and determined to get to Elysium to be cured. Problem for both him and his friend Frey’s daughter, who suffers from a childhood cancer, they are not considered “citizens” by the machine and so won’t be cured.

See this amazing film Elysium, this week. Tomorrow morning, we will walk at the best kept secret, the Gilroy Sports Park off Monterey on the south end of Gilroy, home to four baseball fields, a childen’s play area, and a wondrous walking trail, but soon to be surrounded by wealthy people’s homes crowded into the once lovely pepper fields. Hope the builders know these lots flood in the winter.

Come walk in the little sports park before the homes are built.  You’ll see the regulars, a gal with four poofy dogs, a homeless family who lives in their van with a dog and two children, hanging their laundry apparently handwashed in the always open bathrooms,  lovely sports people who play ball, a Dad who instructs and runs with his sons around the bases, telling stories about old ball players,

After your walk, see The Butler, a film based on the true experiences of a White House butler who served through 8 presidents. Fictionalized, Forrest Whittaker plays the butler and Oprah Winfrey, his boozy wife. Can’t wait. Who knew this summer would present such a slew of enticing  films.
