Six Steps to Starting at Gavilan College this Fall

Enrollment advice for new students who wish to attend Gavilan College. Classes start on August 31st.

Everybody's talking about it. We're not used to this! Summer on campus used to be a slow time, a season of hot empty walkways and abundant parking. This summer the lots are full, and it looks like fall semester will be busy as well — as of Monday, enrollment was up 10 percent over the same time last fall.

We're happy to be able to offer an increased schedule of classes for the fall. With many other community colleges cutting back and tuition increasing significantly at both CSU and UC systems, more students than ever are counting on Gavilan College.

New students have a six step process to get started (and if this is you, don't wait! Start NOW!)

STEP #1: APPLICATION

Get an application online or at locations in Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister. Submit, and then allow 10 business days for your application to be processed. This is a good time to start on...

STEP #2: FINANCIAL AID

Did you know that a lot of people who are eligible for financial aid don't receive it, because they don't apply? It is worth checking out. The Gavilan College Financial Aid office has information about grants, loans, scholarships and veterans' assistance.

This is also a good time to complete ...

STEP #3: ORIENTATION

You can do this any time after submitting your application but before meeting with a counselor. Orientation sessions are held in person and online for your convenience. (If you do not complete orientation, you will not be able to meet with a counselor for registration assistance.)

STEP #4: MyGAV

Eight days after submitting your application, check to see if you are "in the system." Go to the Gavilan College homepage, and click on MyGav, then on New Users: Get Your Gav ID and PIN. Your Gav ID is very important in everything that comes next.

You need to bring it with you to your ...

STEP #5: ASSESSMENT TEST

If you've never attended college before, you MUST take an Assessment test. This test helps us to make sure you are enrolling in the right classes for your skill level. Click here for testing dates and times. Make an appointment: Call 408-846-4992 to schedule. Remember to bring photo ID. Take the test at least 10 days after submitting your application, then wait 2 business days and ...

STEP #6: SEE A COUNSELOR

A counselor can assist you with course registration. Once you have a Gav ID you can register for classes online; however, a counselor can provide guidance in selecting classes that will make you more successful in completing your educational goals. See a counselor if you are planning to transfer, obtain an AA/AS degree, have completed prerequisite courses or assessment at another college, or wish to take more than 17.99 units in a single semester. Counseling appointments are offered on a "walk-in" basis, and the hours are posted here.

Fall classes start Aug. 31 (except for Aviation, which starts Aug 10).

Have a great semester!
