I don't understand the connection between Christians and Republicans

The connection between the Republican Party and Christianity baffles me. I don't understand why Christian choose Republicans over the Bible.

One thing that's always confused me is the connection between Christians and Republicans. I have to admit that I'm somewhat baffeled. I'd like to encourage Christians to explain it to me in replies to this blog.

First I want to explain my perspective. I am the founder og the Church of Reality which is a religion dedicated to believing in everything that is actually real. (Reality changed my life, it can change your's too!) And I have read the Bible and I understand its overall message.

From my perspective the Bible is a story. But it's not a story without meaning. It start with an original story, the Old Testament, and a sequel, the New Testiment. Christianity is defined mostly by the message of Jesus in the New Testament.

What the Bible actually says is that we are our brother's keeper. Love thy neighbor as thy self. Take care of the poor, the sick, the needy, the homeless, etc. Jesus was a nice guy except for when he lost it when the money changers were operating out of the temple.

So I'm looking at the Tea Party Republican Christian conservatives and I just don't get it. What is the Biblical connection? What I see is the opposite of the Jesus story. Tea Party Republicans are cold and angry. They promote selfishness. Wall Street is welcome in the temple and the old, the sick and the poor are ignored and rejected. What I see is Christians following the story of Ayn Rand and not the story of Jesus Christ.

As you can imagine, as the founder of a reality based religion I get Christian contacting me all the time wanting me to choose to believe what they believe. And I always explain that Realism isn't about just choosing to believe something, it has to be real. If you can prove it - we'll believe it. You can't just make stuff up and believe in it.

But - suppose I decided to turn my back on reality and choose to to believe. What do I believe? Do I believe Jesus or Mitt Romney? I don't understand how people can believe things that are so logically inconsistent.

So when people come to me wanting me to believe in the Bible when it's clear they don't believe it themselves, why should I believe it? Even if I wanted to believe it I don't understand what they are asking me to believe.

The way I see it you can't serve two masters. And you will know them by their fruits. The good tree has the good fruit. I get it. What I don't get is what this has to do with Republicans. Why do Christians believe what the Republicans tell them to believe?

It's like going to see the movie "Star Wars", and then have someone tell me I should believe in it and then have them tell me that Darth Vader was the good guy. I don't believe Star Wars, but Darth Vader wasn't the good guy. Even as a non-believer I know that much.

No matter how hard I try I can not give up reality. In the real world things are logically consistent. Truth is what is actually real. In fact reality is what defines Truth. Without reality there is no truth. Without reality you can just believe anything and truth doesn't even have meaning anymore. How can you even say God is real if you have no respect for reality itself? Without reality there would be no place for God to be real in.

So - explain it to me. What am I missing?
