Memorial Celebration for Long-Time City Recreation Employee This Saturday

Gayle Glines spent 34 years in the recreation department.

A memorial will celebrate the life of Gayle Glines, a long-time employee of Gilroy’s recreation department, at the Student Union building at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Glines, a recreation supervisor and department employee for 34 years, died unexpectedly on Sunday morning said Greg Garcia, youth program coordinator.

“She embodied a true talent and passion for our youth,” said an emotional Mayor Al Pinheiro at Monday’s City Council meeting. “Gayle’s tireless passion was seen all throughout this city and community where she dedicated herself, and she’ll be greatly missed.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring “hand-held appetizers or desserts” to share for the ceremony, as cupcakes were Gline’s favorite, according to a forwarded message from Garcia. Those who intend to bring items should contact Gena Gonzalez at genagonzalez@yahoo.com, and food should be taken to the lounge meeting room.

Following the Japanese tradition of koden, attendees may write a check to the Glines family to help pay for expenses or provide a donation to charity. In the tradition, the family keeps track of the donations and reciprocates during a time of need.

Parking will be available in lot E above the Student Union and lot A near the theater. A buffet lunch will follow the ceremony, and attendees can add to a memory book that will be passed to Glines's grandchildren.
