Dog Days of Summer

Upcoming events for you and your furry best friend.

We’re in the dog days of summer and there are a number of canine-focused events coming up in the next couple of weeks that I wanted to tell you about.

Bark for Life

Relay for Life of Campbell and the American Cancer Society are hosting the first ever “Bark for Life” event on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at .

The event is a fun way for you and your pooch to help raise money in the fight against cancer. In addition to the walk, festivities include a costume contests for big dogs and small dogs, a doggie dance competition, music, raffle and pet portraits.

The minimum registration is $20 and all cancer survivors and pets can participate for free. For more information or to register in advance, visit the Bark for Life website.

Dog Massage Class

Here’s a nice way to give back to your faithful canine companion—learn how to give a proper dog massage.

Eri Suzaki of Canine Therapuetics will teach you the basics of massage and aromatherapy treatments for dogs so that you can massage your best friend at home.

The fee is $25 and the next class is Saturday, Sept. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pet Food Express on Blossom Hill Road in San Jose. For more information or to sign up, visit the Canine Therapeutics website.

The Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA) is throwing an adopt-a-thon on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at their Santa Clara location.

Even if you’re not looking to adopt a dog in the near future, it’s worth it to visit their website to see the adorable island motifs they’re set up for each dog. The adopt-a-thon features “pay what you want” in adoption fees for kittens, cats, dogs and rabbits.

For more information, visit the SVACA website or call (408) 764-0344.

Pet of the Week

This week’s pet in need of a home is lovely Fiona, a Pit Bull Terrier mix. She’s approximately one year and four months old and has a sweet disposition that will melt your heart. Fiona is described as affectionate, curious and well-behaved. Click here to view a video of her in action.
