This new blog presents great doings in and around the Gilroy area. I’m the Nana who has fun going to movies with my grandkids. Playing at Platinum this week,  Cesar Chavez, is  a sensitive portrayal of Cesar Chavez’ life,  presenting little known relationship challenges that could appeal to young viewers such as Chavez’ relationship with his golfing son.  As Chavez chose to dedicate nearly all his time to long pilgramage marches and late night labor meetings, his son moves in with his grandparents.   Chavez’ wife is played brilliantly by America, the actress many of us know from TV.   I wish the film maker had explored this marriage even further.

Cesar Chavez pops with union & family conflicts.  Chavez was one of the greatest Latino Labor Leaders .  “Huelga!”,   America shouts as she is arrested.  An elderly vineyard owner of is tellingly portrayed trying to get his son to take the reins of his ranch.  The sheriff is torn between upholding the law and protecting  ranchers’  rights.  Si se puede.

Little Tyler Grace, just 2, is still singing the song “Let it Go” from Frozen, as we drive to Los Gatos today. Yesterday I went to the Disney store and looked for Olaf, Christophe or Anna dolls.  We also looked for the Dispatch today.  It was bought yesterday by Metro, a delightful Santa Cruz paper which displays my favorite column about people behaving badly.  Kudo’s to the children’s father, Mark E. Derry, for the long hours and weekends he has served over three decades as Editor of the Dispatch. All health and happiness as you come to enjoy retirement.  I still remember when Mark was awarded a National Journalism Award for his touching column about giving his father, Ed Derry, black socks every Christmas.

Enjoy the coming week off with your children home from school or college.   Be happy & safe as we enjoy the rainy weather which today replenished our reservoirs an entire inch.  I may get up to Tahoe to ski yet.  Be prepared for our 80 degree predicted weather on Saturday or Sunday. The entire clan is going up to my Mom’s in Menlo on Easter Sunday, April 20th. Thankfully Whole Foods will provide the quiche lorraine and other yummy delights such as salad with strawberries.  We’ll have fun with Nana, Oma Gussie and the whole Tarmann Derry Tate Catalano Clan.

Jackson and Tyler have had fun searching for the little green and pink plastic eggs filled with stickers, found at CVS.  Adults & kidlets seem entranced with these eggs, which in the larger size include a tool to etch figures of moths, butterflies and bees.   Nob Hill has little chocolate covered cashews to fill an Easter basket. Passover also approaches, my dear colleague reminds me.  Which enables me to sub for her on this religious holiday. I hope that whoever plans next year’s holiday schedule for GUSD moves our week off closer to Easter and Good Friday itself. This could be sure to save the district ADA.

All sunshine and fun as we look forward to hunting for dyed hard boiled eggs. Better find every one, if it rains and we have to search inside.
