Cause of Thursday Fire Under Investigation

The fire occurred at nearly the same time as another incident near Christopher High School.

The cause of a fire that burned approximately three acres of brush and several discarded cars in Gilroy on Thursday is still under investigation, said Randy Decker, Gilroy Fire Department engineer.

Firefighters from all three Gilroy fire stations responded to the incident at 3:56 p.m., along with units from Cal Fire, the Santa Clara County Fire Department and a number of fire chiefs from the different agencies.

A firefighting aircraft from Cal Fire took off from an airport near Hollister and was circling the incident to provide support from the air if necessary, Decker said.

The fire occurred at approximately the same time as another reported flare-up in a canal near Christopher High School, Decker said.

Gilroy Fire Chief Dale Foster arrived at the canal fire and determined that the person who reported the flames had it under control, diverting the responding engine to instead help with the Kern incident.
