Countywide DUI Checkpoint Arrests Down This Year

Hundreds of allegedly intoxicated drivers were arrested during a 15-day enforcement period, authorities said.

By Bay City News

Law enforcement throughout Santa Clara County have made hundreds of DUI arrests in a 15-day period through Saturday, but the number of arrests are down from this time last year, officials said.

From 12:01 a.m. Aug. 16 through midnight on Saturday, 13 law enforcement agencies have recorded 272 arrests for people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the sheriff's office.

The number is down considerably from the same time last year, when authorities made 325 - or 53 more - arrests.

While all patrol officers focus on stopping and arresting DUI offenders during normal shifts, the officers are currently in a maximum enforcement period, which ended at midnight Monday.
