Couple Arrested after Failed Carjacking

A San Jose man and Gilroy woman were taken to jail after a bizarre incident in Morgan Hill.

A San Jose man who entered a vehicle that was parked in a Home Depot parking lot in Morgan Hill with a sleeping driver inside earlier this week has been arrested, according to police.

Morgan Hill officers were dispatched on a report of suspicious activity at the Home Depot at 860 E. Dunne Ave. on Wednesday, police said today.

When they arrived, the officers say they were told that while the victim was sleeping inside with the key in the ignition, Brian Lowery, 35, entered the vehicle.

When the victim told Lowery to get out, the suspect allegedly told the victim he was hiding from police.

Lowery got out and was last seen meeting up with a 28-year-old Gilroy woman, Monica Meledrez, police said.

Within minutes, both Meledrez and Lowery were detained nearby.

Police say they determined Lowery had a shaved ignition key and was under the influence of a controlled substance.

Meledrez was also allegedly under the influence of a controlled substance and in possession of a stolen property from a prior Gilroy burglary. Both suspects were arrested.
