Criminal Acts: Child Abuse, Assaults and Found Drugs

The following incidents were supplied by the Gilroy Police Department for July 9-16. The arrest information does not indicate convictions.

Animal Bite

  • 7:19 a.m.—A pit bull aggressively attacked a Dachshund on First Street, causing severe injuries. The owner of the Dachshund was also bitten while trying to protect her dog. The Dachshund was taken to a local vet and the owner was transported to the hospital.

Found Property

  • 2:57 p.m.—A cache of drugs and drug paraphernalia were found on Mantelli Drive. Items included bindles containing .32 grams of marijuana and 3.76 grams of meth. A glass pipe, commonly used to smoke meth, a digital scale with residue, five plastic baggies, a screw driver, 19 q-tips and three car keys were also found.

  • 8:56 a.m.—A 30-year-old man was arrested for trespassing in a garage on Martin Street with a prior trespassing arrest. A probation hold was issues for the arrestee.

Burglary

  • 7 p.m.—An unknown number of suspects cut the lock to a rear shed on Wren Avenue, making off with a lawn mower, valued at $300, and a garden hose, valued at $50 and described as “the good kind.”
  • 5 p.m.—An unknown number of suspects smashed the glass next to the back door room at Brownell Middle School. Upon entering, they stole a white LCD projector, valued at $500. Police believe the crime took place between July 6 at 5 p.m. and July 9 at 8:43 a.m.

  • 1:54 p.m.—The victim reported an unknown suspect used their Social Security number for employment purposes from 2008-2010.
  • 8 a.m.—The victim received letters from the Internal Revenue Service informing them they owed back taxes. The victim said he never worked for the listed company or for the city the company is located. The victim believes someone used his name and Social Security number to gain employment.

Shop Lifting

  • 7:18 p.m.—Two minor males were caught shoplifting from a business on Camino Arroyo. They attempted to take a can of spray paint and a bottle of self-adhesive. Both were cited and released to their parents.

Theft

  • 9:24 p.m.—A 26-year-old man entered the Walmart on Camino Arroyo and stole an air mattress. He was contacted by loss prevention officers and fled on foot. He was later apprehended by responding Gilroy Police Department officers. He had numerous prior thefts from Walmart and was also arrested on an outstanding warrant.
  • 9:00 p.m.—The victim left their cell phone on a case of beer inside the Gilroy Market. Store video surveillance shows an unknown Hispanic man picking up the phone and walking out of the store with it.
  • 8:52 a.m.—An iPod, valued at $400, and bottle of $35 perfume were taken from a vehicle on Arroyo Circle.

Possession

  • 2:37 a.m.—An 18-year-old man was arrested at Fourth Street and Gourmet Alley when officers found him to be in possession of a glass meth pip. The arrestee was cited and released at the scene.
  • 1:01 a.m.—A 45-year-old man was arrested at Monterey Street for possession of methamphetamines.

Assault

  • 10:50 p.m.—A 19-year-old female was involved in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend over a cell phone. The female punched the victim in the face several times and scratched him. She also vandalized the victim’s vehicle.
  • 10:11 p.m.—A 44-year-old man was arrested after he struck two juveniles with a baseball bat at a park on Saddler Drive. The man reportedly accused the minors of throwing firecrackers at his residence.
  • 2:45 p.m.—A female victim was assaulted by three of her sisters at a property on Farrell Avenue. The victim sustained numerous scratches and brusies.
  • 2 p.m.—A suspect pushed and scratched a victim at W Eighth Street and Monterey Street. The victim sustained no visible injuries. The case has been sent the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.

Domestic Disturbance

  • 8 p.m.—A 56-year-old woman was arrested for punching and scratching a male victim, who displayed visible marks of injury. The arrestee also threatened to dowse the man with gasoline and burn him alive.

Auto Accident

  • 4:22 a.m.—An unknown suspect was driving a suspicious vehicle on Carmel Street and Third Street. He attempted to evade officers before crashing against a curb and fence. Officers learned the vehicle was stolen. The suspect fled on foot after the crash and remains at large.

Child Abuse

  • 5 p.m.—A 35-year-old man was arrested on Lilly Avenue after striking his song several times in the face, causing injuries. The child was taken into protective custody, along with the child’s two siblings.
