Criminal Acts: Theft with a Slim Jim and Elderly Trickery

The following incidents were supplied by the Gilroy Police Department. The arrest information does not indicate convictions.

Gilroy police responded to an assortment of calls from Thursday through Sunday, from car accidents to thefts to graffiti. Here’s a selection from the latest press report.

Friday, April 6
An elderly man was approached at the Walmart on Camino Arroyo by two male suspects who convinced him to gamble on a coin game. The victim took $300 out of his wallet and asked on of the suspects to hold the cash during the game, but the suspects fled with the victim’s money.

Thursday, April 5
6 p.m.—A suspect opened the unlocked window of a school building located on Carmel Street and took a desktop computer valued at $600 from a classroom.

3:55 p.m.—A suspect used a Slim Jim to gain entry into a truck and then cut the truck’s battery cables. The suspect stole the stereo and navigation systems along with 200 music CD’s. The suspect caused over $4,000 in damage and losses.

Wednesday, April 4
3:25 p.m.—A woman was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend who then took their child and fled the area. There is apparently no custody order in place.

Tuesday, April 3
8 p.m.—Unknown suspect(s) entered a residence on Welburn Avenue and stole over $14,500 worth of items. The suspects reportedly stole collector coins worth $7,000 and jewelry valued at an additional $7,000, among other items.

5 p.m.—A man reported that his car had been stolen. The vehicle had reportedly been involved in a hit-and-run on March 25, but he told police he was not the person driving the vehicle.

Monday, April 2
11 p.m.—A runaway juvenile assaulted her mother and then stole her purse that contained $2,000 cash.

8:26 p.m.—A 33-year-old man was arrested on Monterey Street for an outstanding warrant. The man was initially pulled over for driving without his headlights on, and then attempted to provide police with a false name and date of birth.

1:28 p.m.—A 27-year-old woman was arrested on Eigleberry Street for assaulting her husband.

9:01 a.m.—A victim’s debit card was stolen after a suspect burglarized the victim’s car at Gilroy Gardens. The debit card was found to have been used in Watsonville.
