DA Declines to File Charges Against Woman Who Left Infant In Car

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office has decided not to file charges against a Morgan Hill woman , leading to a statewide Amber Alert, a deputy district attorney said today.

On the afternoon of May 31, Maribel Corona left her keys in the ignition of her car while she ran into a food bank at Saint Catherine's Church in Morgan Hill, located at 17400 Peak Ave., Morgan Hill police said.

Her 1-month-old daughter, Mariana Corona Vidal, was in the back seat of the car, which was stolen at about 2 p.m. and found more than three hours later by a nurse in Salinas. Mariana was still strapped in to her car seat when the car was found.

Prosecutors considered charging Corona with child endangerment, deputy district attorney Steve Dick said.

"We reviewed police reports and information in the case, and have decided not to press criminal charges at this time," Dick said.

He declined to elaborate on the reasons behind the decision.

Emergency room nurse Peggy Clancy found Corona's car, a white Infiniti Q45, at Toro Park after returning from a two-hour hike.

The keys were still in the ignition, and the robbery suspects were gone by the time she arrived, she said.

No arrests have been made in the case.
