UPDATE: Driver, Dog Die at Scene of Car Collision

CHP still investigating collision that occurred Friday afternoon just north of Gilroy.

The name of a woman transported to San Jose Regional Hospital on Friday was confirmed as Janice Settle, a 64-year-old resident of Morgan Hill. Settle was pronounced dead about an hour after arriving at the hospital. The name of the other driver in the crash was confirmed as Roman Becerra, a 24-year-old Madera resident.

Settle's dog, which died at the scene, had initially appeared OK but later died from a broken back that caused internal bleeding, according to CHP officer Tiffany Lopez.

A fatal collision that occurred Friday at the corner of Buena Vista Avenue and No Name Uno just north of Gilroy is still under investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.

On Friday at 4:50 p.m., the CHP responded to the collision. The first driver was traveling westbound on Buena Vista Avenue, and the second was traveling south on No Name Uno, according to Jaime L. Rios from the Hollister-Gilroy-area CHP.

The  vehicles collided at the four-way intersection of Buena Vista Avenue and No Name Uno, said Rios. The second driver, whose identity will be released through the Santa Clara coroner, was unresponsive at the scene.

She was transported to San Jose Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:53 p.m. Her dog, which was in the back seat, later died at the scene of the collision.

The first driver did not have any injuries. Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision, said Rios, but the CHP is still looking into further details.
