Driver Stayed On Scene After Monday's Deadly Collision

Investigators are reconstructing the incident that took the life of David Vogel.

The driver of the van that hit and killed 40-year-old city employee on Monday did not flee the scene after the incident, according to Gilroy Police Department spokesman Chad Gallacinao.

"It was not a hit and run, and the driver was not arrested," he said.

Specific information about the driver is not available due to provisions in the California Vehicle Code, the spokesman said.

Members of the department's Major Accident Investigation Team gathered evidence and a series of special measurements to help determine the nature of the collision.

Reconstructing the event can take some time, Gallacinao said.

"Traffic accidents of this nature are very time consuming, because we want to get it right," he said.

Police closed off part of Gilroy’s Farrell Avenue Monday morning while investigating the scene.

The incident happened near 90 Farrell Ave., close to Monterey Road, around 11 a.m.

Vogel, a maintenance worker and city employee since 1997, was out “on routine duty, performing inspections” before the incident, according to a press release from the city.

The memorial service for David Vogel will be Saturday at the South Valley Community Church, 8095 Kelton Dr., in Gilroy. Viewing will begin at 9 a.m., and the service will begin at 10 a.m.
