Drunken Driving Holiday Arrests Drop

Number of DUI winter holiday arrests drops from 458 in 2012 to 452 in 2013, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

A slight decrease in the number of drunken driving arrests is being reported during the winter holiday "Avoid the 13" crackdown by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

There were six fewer arrests than last year during the 19-day enforcement period, which began at midnight Dec. 12, 2013 and continued through midnight Jan. 1.

A total of 452 individuals were taken into custody in 2013 for DUI as compared to 458 in 2012, according to sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup.

The number of DUI arrests for the campaign could increase as some agencies have not yet reported their final tallies, Stenderup said.

There were also no fatal DUI collisions during the crackdown, Stenderup noted.

Law enforcement officials said they'll conduct more avoid DUI operations throughout the county and region during Super Bowl Sunday in February and St. Patrick's Day in March.
