Early Morning Carjacking Yields One Fugitive, One Arrest

Police are looking for a man who stole a car in Gilroy on July 8.

On July 8 at approximately 07:15 a.m., Gilroy Police Officers responded to the 700 Block of El Cerrito Way for a report of a carjacking. The victim, a 44-year-old Gilroy man, indicated that two men arrived in a black Lexus driven by who is believed to be Cesar Garcia, 24, of Modesto (pictured above).

Garcia's passenger excited the Lexus and approached the victim’s vehicle which was on, and with the keys in the ignition. The victim attempted to prevent the theft. The suspect pushed the victim and was able to steal the vehicle. The victim was not injured

At approximately 07:35 a.m. Officers observed the Lexus driven by Garcia in the area of Leavesley Road and Highway 101. As the officers attempted to the stop the vehicle, the Garcia fled south on 101. He lost control of the Lexus and crashed it on the side of the road and was arrested.

It was determined that Lexus was also a stolen vehicle, previously reported missing from San Jose.

The suspect who stole car in Gilroy remains outstanding along with the stolen 1998 silver four-door Saturn sedan bearing California license plate 4YBD579. The man is described as Hispanic, 5'7" and 155 pounds. Please report any sighting to the Gilroy Police Department. 

Community members are reminded not to leave unattended running vehicles.
