Extra Police Enforcement will Focus on School Traffic Safety

A grant from the national Safe Routes to School program will allow for 'saturated traffic enforcement.'

As school begins again in the Gilroy Unified School District, the Gilroy Police Department will begin “saturated traffic enforcement” at different times throughout the school year, police said.

A grant from the national Safe Routes to School program will fund the extra officers, according to police.

While the department asks that drivers are always aware of safety issues near schools, police have identified a list of specific violations that are common as parents are dropping off their kids and commuters are on their way to work:

  • Double parking
  • Illegal U-turns
  • Speed
  • Impeding traffic (stopping in the traffic lane)
  • Pedestrian violations, including jaywalking
  • Cellphone violations
  • Distracted driving violations

Police ask for parents to plan in advance for a safe and legal way to drop off their children.
