Fire Engulfs Car on Monterey, Wednesday

Two fire engines responded to the car fire that took place right outside the Gilroy Welcome Center.

The Gilroy Fire Department responded to a report of a car fire in front of the Gilroy Welcome Center on Monterey Road on Wednesday, and had the fire contained within 10 minutes, Capt. Tim Price of the said.

Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene at around 2 p.m., and found the midsize Chrysler to be completely engulfed, Price said.

The unintentional fire took two fire engines and 200 gallons of cold, foamy water to contain.

Price said car fires usually require a one-engine response, but that they took extra precaution because it was located so close to the Gilroy Welcome Center.

“Being that it was next to a building, we actually sent a full First Alarm. We sent everybody and used two crews to extinguish the fire,” Price said.

Price said the fire appeared to start in the engine compartment, and that it was a total loss.
