Four Arrested at DUI Checkpoint

Also, 10 citations were issued to drivers for driving unlicensed and eight citations were issued to drivers driving on a suspended license.

A sobriety checkpoint Friday night in Gilroy netted four arrests for suspected drunken driving, Gilroy Police asid.

Approximately 556 vehicles drove through the DUI/ Driver’s License Checkpoint. Of those, 26 motorists were diverted to the secondary checkpoint. Four drivers were arrested for DUI; a fifth driver was arrested for a narcotic related violation. Also, 10 citations were issued to drivers for driving unlicensed and eight citations were issued to drivers driving on a suspended license, police said.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided to the Gilroy Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Gilroy Police Department’s Traffic Unit will continue to have these checkpoints.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes, police said. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.
