Gilroy Man Dies in Head-on Hwy 25 Accident

The early Friday collision involved five people from Gilroy.

Eliaquin Perez, a 31-year-old Gilroy man, died Friday after his vehicle was hit head-on by an 81-year-old driver on State Route 25 near the Canadero Bridge between Hollister and Gilroy.

Perez and his passenger, Freddy Perez, 27, also of Gilroy, were in their 1996 Plymouth heading south on SR 25 at 5:40 a.m. when an elderly Saratoga man in a 1995 Jeep driving north drifted across the double yellow lines and into the southbound lane, CHP Officer Erica Elias said in a prepared statement.

There was no time for Perez to swerve and avoid the collision.

Trailing behind Perez in the southbound lane were two more cars containing three three more Gilroy residents — two 29-year-old men and a 33-year-old woman. The drifting Jeep continued in the wrong lane, smashing into the two other cars as well, sending "all three vehicles ... into the bridge abutment," Elias said.

Eliaquin Perez was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The wong-way driver also suffered minor injuries and was treated at the hospital.

According to Elias, alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident and all drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts. The road was closed for almost four hours after the accident, and the collision is still under investigation.

Nobody and I mean Nobody hasRead More the right to rape or force a femsle to have sex with her,and then to make matters worse, they posted pictures of her on facebook ! The offensive comment we're discussing shows a complete lack of respect for women that permeates ourRead More culture. That this person actually thought this poor young girl had culpability for her attack is a symptom of our societies disregard for women. I'm actually glad he made the comment so we can look at and discuss the problem.

From one of the interviews I watched online, it seems that many Saratoga High students knew whatRead More happened at the party and had seen the pictures. How is it that arrests did not follow the assault and the suicide for over 6 months? Could it be that the students who knew information about the felony chose to remain silent? I hope that is not the case; we will surely find out as the details of the case are revealed in the media over the next weeks and months. In the meantime lets make sure we are teaching our kids about the responsibility of living in community and caring about others. God forbid that any of the students have to live with the knowledge that they could have prevented the suicide, or with the knowledge that they helped cover up such a heinous crime.
