Police at checkpoint will review drivers' licenses and check for drunk driving.

Get your licenses ready, Gilroy drivers.

The Gilroy Police Department will be administering a DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday, August 13 from 8 pm to Sunday, August 14 at 2:30 am.

The purposes of the checkpoint, according to Gilroy Police Sergeant Chad Gallacinao, are to raise awareness of the negative effects of drunk driving, arrest drunk drivers, and to review drivers’ licenses of those who pass through. The location of the checkpoint will not be announced.

"It's going to be within the city of Gilroy, but we don't want to tell people so that they avoid the area," said Gallacinao.

The program was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The police department, said Gallacinao, also gained more support with the recent deployment of an additional traffic officer.

Overall, the police department hopes to raise much-needed awareness about the consequences of drunk driving, said Gallacinao.

"People become complacent in their lives," said Gallacinao. "Drunk driving is not only a crime, but a crime with serious consequences."
