Hwy 152 Closed After Driver Crashes Truckload of Electronics

Drivers should find alternate routes throughout the late morning and early afternoon.

Motorists planning to head east from Gilroy Thursday morning are advised to take Highway 101 to 25 rather than using 152, as the road is closed due to a semi truck crash.

A truck traveling west on 152 around 9 a.m. Thursday crashed into a ditch at Lovers Lane after the driver fell asleep at the wheel, CHP Officer Erica Elias told Gilroy Patch.

The trailer, containing electronic equipment, overturned onto its side and the fuel tank ruptured, spilling 35 gallons of diesel into the ditch and onto the roadway.

Bracco's Towing is on the scene to remove the truck and Caltrans is assisting in the clean-up, Elias said. It is estimated that 152 will remain closed from San Felipe to Bloomfield for two to three hours while the scene is cleared.

Anyone heading from the valley into Gilroy should take 156, while eastbound travelers should take 101 to 25, as traffic will build up on 152 in both directions, Elias said.

Elias said the 31-year-old driver, a Compton resident, suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Earlier this week, a 7-year-old boy was killed in a colission involving a Toyota Tercel and a semi truck 16 miles east of Thursday's incident.
