Men Stab and Rob Gilroy Man

The assault is not being investigated as gang related at this time.

A 32-year-old Gilroy man was stabbed and beaten as he was walking home at around 12 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, according to Sgt. Chad Gallacinao of the .

The man was carrying a bag of groceries around the area of Seventh and Chestnut streets when he was approached by a group of unknown men who were interested in his items.

Gallacinao said the victim was physically assaulted with the suspects’ hands and feet when they first approached him, and that he was then stabbed multiple times with a knife.

The suspects subsequently fled with the victim’s property, including his pack of beer. As of now, Gallacinao said police are unsure of the number of suspects involved because of the time of night that the assault took place.

“We’re still investigating, and contacting additional witnesses to get information,” he said.

The victim was transported to for non-life threatening injuries. Gallacinao said the motive of the attack is currently being investigated, and that the case will be sent to the department’s Anti-Crime Team if a gang relation is determined.

“As of right now it’s not being investigated as gang related, but if we determine it is gang related during the course of the investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Anti-Crime Team,” he said.
