No Leads on Missing Teen, Authorities Interview Sexual Assault Registrants

Morgan Hill high school sophomore Sierra Lamar remains missing as of Tuesday afternoon, and investigators have been conducting relentless interviews with classmates and South County residents in an attempt to find her.

Investigators are continuing to interview students from Sierra's previous high school in Fremont, Washington High School, and her current Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill. Investigators began conducting interviews at the schools on Monday, but didn't obtain any leads, Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office wrote in a prepared statement.

Investigators will also canvass Sierra’s mother’s Morgan Hill home and will re-contact neighbors in the area for additional information.

As a precaution, the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement task force is physically contacting and interviewing all known South County residents who have a sexual assault conviction.

“The purpose of contacting [the sexual assault] registrants in the area is to confirm their whereabouts during the time Sierra went missing,” Cardoza wrote.

There are approximately 267 active sexual assault registrants in the Southern Santa Clara County area, with 144 coming out of Gilroy, 101 in Morgan Hill and 22 in San Martin.

Sierra’s biological father, Steve Wayne Lamar of Fremont, is a current sexual assault registrant, but isn’t a person of interest in Sierra’s disappearance. The father has been fully cooperative since the beginning of the investigation, Cardoza wrote.

Forensic examinations of Sierra’s cell phone and computer are still being conducted. The teen's cell phone was found on the side of the road over the weekend at 7 p.m. at the north-east corner of Scheller Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard, which is three quarters of a mile from the Lamar home.

"The cellphone was intact, it wasn't broken," Cardoza said. "There's no evidence to lead to a crime after that."

Investigators said Monday that they haven't found any signs of foul play in the investigation thus far, and that they've also not seen signs that are common in a runaway situation. According to Cardoza, there have been no fights at home or any sign that Lamar was unhappy.

"Everything was status quo at home," he said.
