Two suspects attempting to flee police following a robbery in Sunnyvale led law enforcement on a high-speed chase on southbound U.S. Highway 101 to Morgan Hill Monday night, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
At about 10:20 p.m. officers from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle near the intersection of East Arques and America avenues in Sunnyvale, police said.
Officers said the man driving the vehicle did not pull over and attempted to evade police.
A few minutes later, officers received a report of an armed robbery from a store clerk at the Quik Shop Market, a convenience store located about one block away, at 395 N. Fair Oaks Ave., police said.
The clerk who was working at the store that night said the suspects were both wearing all black and armed with silver pistols.
The suspects demanded money from the store clerk and, out of fear for his life, he handed over the cash from the register.
The store clerk told police that he was robbed at gunpoint before the suspects fled the store's parking lot in a vehicle, police said.
Police said the store clerk was not injured during the robbery.
According to officers, the description of the vehicle that the clerk provided matched that of the vehicle which officers were attempting to stop only a block away.
Police said the driver, along with another male occupant, continued to evade police and were speeding when they entered southbound U.S. Highway 101.
According to police, the suspects continued south on Highway 101 for almost 30 miles before the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a chain link fence near Tennant Avenue in Morgan Hill.
Both suspects got out of the vehicle and fled into a nearby field, police said.
Morgan Hill police, with the assistance of officers from Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, San Jose police, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol, set up a perimeter around the field.
Within minutes of the crash, law enforcement officials were able to apprehend one of the suspects, identified as a Mountain View resident.
Despite an extensive search of the field and a nearby building, the second suspect has not been located, police said.
