Salinas Man Killed in High-Speed Car Wreck

The crash happened early Sunday near San Ysidro Park; the man was not wearing a seat belt.

A 29-year-old Salinas man died in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday near San Ysidro Park in Gilroy, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. on southbound Murray Avenue where it turns right onto Chestnut Street. According to the CHP, the man was speeding in a 2004 Mercedes and lost control at the 90-degree right turn. The car went over the curb and sidewalk, striking a tree, the CHP reported.

CHP officers found the vehicle smoking and the driver unresponsive. They extinguished the fire. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. His name has not been released pending notification of relatives.

The man not wearing a seatbelt, the CHP reported. He was alone in the car and no other vehicles were involved.
