SJPD Reacts to Gilroy Deaths

Counselors help officers deal with emotional toll.

San Jose Police are dealing with the death of one of their own today, as the investigation continues in the possible murder-suicide of Sgt. Christopher Shimek and his wife, Lynn, who were found dead Sunday night.

Shimek had been with San Jose Police since 1995, according to Sgt. Jason Dwyer with San Jose Police Department. He and his wife, Lynn, were found dead in their Gilroy home about 9:40 p.m. Sunday.

Shimek spent the past two years working as a patrol sergeant and the previous 14 as an officer, Dwyer said.

In San Jose, "we’re really just trying to deal with the fallout of the incident," Dwyer said. Counselors responded within an hour after Shimek was found, Dwyer said, to help fellow officers deal emotionally with the death of their colleague.

The couple has two sons, ages 13 and 19, Dwyer said. The force has reached out to the boys with offers of help, but a fund or other benefit has not been set up.
