UPDATE: Suspects at Large After Two Potentially Linked Robberies

Gilroy police are investigating whether two Saturday night robberies that occurred within six minutes of each other near I.O.O.F and Murray avenues are related.

The is investigating two potentially linked robberies that targeted a taxicab driver and a pedestrian Saturday night.

In the first robbery, two suspects entered through the rear passenger-side door of a taxi parked near the intersection of I.O.O.F and Murray avenues at 10:26 p.m., and began demanding money from the driver in Spanish. One of the suspects punched the driver while the other tried to choke him from behind, Sgt. Robert Locke-Paddon of the GPD wrote in a prepared statement.

The suspects took an undetermined amount of money before fleeing southbound on Murray Avenue.

Police believe one of the suspects who robbed the taxi driver may have been armed with a knife, although the driver didn't see one. The taxi driver sustained minor injuries but refused medical treatment, Locke-Paddon wrote.

The second robbery happened about six minutes later. A pedestrian was walking along the 500 block of I.O.O.F Avenue when he was approached by a suspect brandishing a folding pocketknife, who began demanding the victim’s personal items in English.

The suspect reportedly asked the victim if he was affiliated with a gang, but the victim said he wasn't. The suspect then fled southbound on Murray Avenue after taking the victim’s property.

The suspects in both robberies remain outstanding and are described as young Hispanic males.

The taxi driver didn't get a good look at the suspects but described them as a two Hispanic males between 15 and 17 years old. One of the suspects was reportedly wearing a white and gray sweatshirt and the other was dressed in a black shirt, Locke-Paddon wrote.

The suspect who robbed the pedestrian is described as a Hispanic male between the ages of 18 and 21 and is believed to be affiliated with a gang, Locke-Paddon wrote. He is reportedly around 6 feet tall with a thin build and was wearing a black baseball cap, black shirt and black pants at the time of the robbery.

Sgt. Jason Kadluboski of the GPD said police contacted several people they identified as potential suspects, but that none of them have been linked to the robberies.

"This is being investigated," Kadluboski said. "We have the descriptions of the suspects and all that information has been given to our patrol officers to look for these people, someone similar or someone dressed similarly."

Kadluboski said he did not know whether the two robberies are related.
