The collision occurred at 10:12 p.m. Wednesday night, and the driver sustained major injuries after crashing his white Mustang into a tree across the street from the Home Town Buffet located at 7950 Arroyo Circle.

The passenger likely sustained major injuries as well, although this hasn't been confirmed.

"The vehicle sustained major impact, so I would assume he had major injuries, but my medics and I did not look at him," Harmon said.

Of the two vehicle occupants, responding officers were able to extricate the passenger from the crushed vehicle themselves, while the jaws of life were utilized to untangle the driver of the vehicle, Harmon said.

"The car was crashed down around him," she said.

Harmon said it took approximately 34 minutes to extricate the driver from the vehicle, and that both were flown out to a hospital via air ambulance.

Harmon believes the vehicle occupants were flown out to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Two engines were on scene, along with one battalion chief, Harmon said. Officers from the Gilroy Police Department are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
