Update: Alejo Will Return to State House

Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville) successfully defended the District 30 seat from challenger Rob Bernosky.

As votes rolled in from a four-county area, the state Assembly race between incumbent Luis Alejo (D-Watsonville) and Rob Bernosky, a Conservative businessman from Hollister , appeared close but Alejo pulled away to have a clear victory.

Alejo tallied 18,936 votes to Bernosky's 13,481.

District 30, a largely rural area, stretches into the agricultural hubs of four counties. Alejo, a former Watsonville mayor, was first elected to the state house in 2010.

The district reaches into the southern portion of Santa Clara County, including Gilroy. For Santa Clara County, Alejo netted just under 54 percent to Bernosky's 46 percent when all 62 precincts were counted.

In Santa Cruz County, only mail-in ballots had been counted by midnight Tuesday. Alejo was up 63 percent to 36 percent, but all 23 precincts still needed to report.

In San Benito County, about a quarter of the vote had been tallied by the end of Tuesday. There, Alejo held just a slim lead over Bernosky.

About two-thirds of votes were tallied in Monterey County, and Alejo's lead there widened by about 3,000 votes.
