Gilroy Pays City Council Members Less Than Allowed By State, According to LA Times Analysis

A Los Angeles Times analysis of statewide city council pay found that most cities pay their council members under the amount allowed by the state.

Most cities in California pay their city council members less than what state law allows, and Gilroy is no exception.

That is according to the Los Angeles Times, who published an analysis of city-by-city compensation figures for city council members last week. In Gilroy, the average total pay is $15,393, or under the $20,318 guideline specified by the state.

About three-quarters of the 481 incorporated communities in California, including Gilroy, are “general law” cities which are governed by financial statues imposed by the state Legislature. The Times analysis found the pay in all but 31 of these communities is less than the legal limit, and that most cities do not take advantage of the 5 percent annual raise.
